About
Kate Mellis is an award-winning television producer and journalist with a passion for creating compelling and engaging factual stories that start national conversations, bring about social change and entertain in a meaningful way.
Kate has worked in radio and television for 20 years - researching, reporting and producing news and entertainment. She spent a short time in the world of state politics as a media advisor before returning to her love of storytelling.
It’s a career that has taken her around the world capturing extraordinary stories, including Rwanda’s unprecedented experiment in reconciliation; an inspirational Aussie saving the country’s sun and moon bears in Cambodia; a selfless health crusader in Laos; and a brave child sacrifice survivor in Uganda in desperate need of medical treatment only possible in Australia.
Kate is passionate about social justice and uses in-depth reporting and an uncompromising sense of purpose to promote and champion change. Her work has influenced government policy and led to substantial funding for various charitable causes. Kate was awarded WayAhead’s Mental Health Matters Media Award in 2016 and she was a finalist in the United Nations Association of Australia Media Peace Awards in 2014.
Kate is experienced in filming sensitive subjects and situations with empathy, integrity and respect. She loves the art of interviewing, directing, writing and collaborating with others equally as enthusiastic about their craft. Kate is naturally curious, has a strong news sense, the ability to work under pressure and demonstrates great attention to detail.
She also loves a laugh. And is partial to a bit of interpretive dance. Usually in the comfort of her own home, but she has been known to break out the moves in supermarket aisles.
